In 2021 The idea of the Glen Burnie Players was formed over coffee at the local Starbucks. I had already started reaching out to local folks about doing a TV show. Fortunately for me, George Mannix's wife saw my ad. George and I would eventually meet at that Starbucks and a collaboration was begun.
The show focuses on Optimism and Positivity here in Anne Arundel County. So, how is a show put together? It all starts with events that are turned into short informative segments.
Our next show will feature The Original 27, this patriotic group is part of the Dewey Lowman American Legion of Arbutus Maryland. George and I met them while participating in the Howard County Veterans Day Parade. They understand the significance of the original U.S. Flag, how the states are represented, and feel a duty to tell the story.
A few weeks later, coming into the Christmas season, I saw an ad, this time for an open house in Baltimore. The name of the business was Krug and Son. It just happened to be the oldest operating ironworks and museum in the country, let alone Maryland. While the show's focus was Anne Arundel County, I could not pass this up.
Now, with Christmas around the corner, a Holiday Train Garden was set up at Marley Mall Station. This was an annual event as they took over the space once occupied by a Friendly’s Restaurant many moons ago. The Emmanuel Lutheran Church ran the event which lasted a few weeks. Donations were accepted. I doubt they ran in the black.
Later that same day, I found myself at the Gingerbread fund raiser. BWR (The Train Garden) was a foundation set up in a storefront in the Marley Mall. Its leader, G, founded it with the goal of supporting autoimmune diseases research. Each year they honor and support a member of the community diagnosed in such a way. This year's recipient was there during my visit.
Each Glen Burnie Players show has a musical component. In my travels, there are always musicians willing to play for the public. My wife and I traveled a lot this year. I have musicians as diverse as from Jamaica and Hawaii, but also plenty of local flavor from the Linthicum Fair, Glen Burnie Library events, and Annapolis West street.
The hardest part of putting a show together is the interview of a local resident. I try to build relationships before asking for an interview. What I find is that folks are often leery of going on tape for anything other than a selfie. Even after building relationships, folks back out. So, if you know anyone?????
