About LSIA

The Linthicum-Shipley Improvement Association (LSIA) is the heart of advocacy and community spirit for the Linthicum and Shipley areas of Anne Arundel County. Since its formal incorporation in 1975, the LSIA has served as a dedicated guardian of the "quiet hub," ensuring that our neighborhood maintains its unique character as a peaceful, suburban retreat nestled within the busy Baltimore-Washington corridor.

Our History
The roots of the LSIA stretch back to the mid-20th century, growing from a deep-seated pride in our local heritage. The association was formed through the merger of two historic groups: the Linthicum Civic Association, which dated back to the 1950s, and the Shipley Improvement Association, founded in the early 1970s. These two organizations joined forces to create a stronger, unified voice for our community.

Our neighborhood history is intertwined with the legacy of the Linthicum family, whose 1801 land purchase laid the foundation for our town. From the early days of the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line railroad to the legislative contributions of John Charles Linthicum—who sponsored the bill making "The Star-Spangled Banner" our National Anthem—the LSIA works to preserve these stories through various projects in our community.

Our Purpose & Mission
The mission of the LSIA is simple yet vital: to preserve and enhance the quality of life for every resident. We act as the primary liaison between our community and elected officials, county agencies, and state departments. Our work focuses on four key pillars:
  • Advocacy: We provide a platform for residents to address concerns regarding zoning, public safety, and transportation. Whether it’s discussing traffic improvements on Camp Meade Road or working with local police to address neighborhood safety, the LSIA ensures your voice is heard.
  • Beautification: We take direct, hands-on responsibility for keeping our neighborhood looking its best. The LSIA independently maintains and seasonally decorates our community entrance signs and markers, ensuring that the visual gateways to Linthicum and Shipley reflect our collective pride.
  • Community Engagement: We foster a sense of belonging through monthly meetings and beloved local traditions
  • Informing the Public: Through our newsletters and monthly meetings (held the second Wednesday of every month), we keep residents updated on everything from legislative changes to upcoming local events.

The LSIA is a voluntary, non-profit organization managed by a 12-person board of directors. We believe that a community is only as strong as the people who participate in it.
